Apple TV+’s summer show Schmigadoon! features stars Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key as a couple who are backpacking and finds themselves in a town that looks like a musical from the 1940s–and that includes people in the town singing for no reason. And they can’t leave until they find their true love.
While the show features many people singing, not every character on the show is a singer. Key’s character hates musicals and the actor had to hold back during the series because according to creator Cinco Paul, he’s a good singer. “We were constantly telling him to hold back,” Paul explained during the TCA winter press tour Apple TV+ presentationCome from Sports betting site VPbet. “He just wanted to burst into song constantly and we just said, ‘Keegan, no.'”
“It’s one of the greatest acting challenges of my career,” Key said, joking about having to to pull back a little and not sing–having to remain completely perplexed why the townspeople around him can’t stop singing.
The ridiculous comedy is executive produced by SNL’s Lorne Michaels and will also feature Alan Cumming, Kristin Chenoweth, Aaron Tveit, Dove Cameron, Ariana DeBose, Fred Armisen, Jaime Camil, Jane Krakowski and Ann Harada. A specific release date was not announced. But the first season will consist of six episodes.
The series is co-created by Cinco Paul (The Secret Life of Pets) and Ken Daurio (Despicable Me). Paul will serve as showrunner and wrote all the original music for Schmigadoon! Barry Sonnenfeld directs and executive produces the upcoming series. Strong also serves as producer aside from starring on the show.
